Hello Welcome to Save The Bees. The native honey bee is in real trouble in the UK and across Europe from parasites and disease and the UK government and the European Parlimentary Union recognise that without intervention from scientists, DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), FERA (The Food and Environment Research Agency) in the UK, commercial bee keepers and hobbyists the bee population is likely to continue falling year on year. Just to put you in the picture with how serious an issue this is, the UK government believes that pollinator services are valued at around £440 million, or 13 % of the total value of agriculture, and 10% of this is provided by domestic honey bees. So £44 million is how much the honey bee population is worth in the UK and for us to manage the diseases and ensure the continuation of a sustainable population we need to act now. Everyone can take part whether its sponsoring a hive, owning one yourself or making your garden a more bee friendly place we can all contribute. Owning a bee hive has its beenfits and apart from the odd sting here and there i'm sure the free honey will more than make amends. The native bees in the UK and across Europe are now at the mercy of parasite known as Varroa , this parasite and other diseases some naturally occuring and others brought in from overseas are wiping out the wild populations of bees. Click here for more information on Varroa. I am a bee keeper and I specialise in supplying and manufacturing quality hives made from Cedar, Redwood and Exterior Plywood. I love my hobby of bee keeping and with the odd loss of a swarm here and there I know I am contributing to the pollination stock and helping the bees to survive. I am sure the world would be a dreadful place to be if our bees were gone so I urge you to give it a go. If you want to do your bit for the future of the UK honey bee then become a bee keeper? However please bare in mind there is a lot more to becoming a bee keeper than owning a bee hive so please take the time to read around the subject and get on a course to introduce you to bee keeping. you local Bee Keepers Association will have all the information you need to get started. I would recommend A Guide to Bees and Honey by Ted Hooper - available from many book shops and online.
I have included some pages on this site to help the new beekeepers among you to survive your first few years. If you are ready to get started please see our hives and bee keeping products here, our fantastic value beginners kit is a great place to start.
